Aragonite

Aragonite is a common calcium carbonate mineral. Specimens of Aragonite have formed through various geological processes, including hydrological formation. The mineral is closely related to Calcite, but differs in its crystal system amd structure - Calcite is Trigonal, while Aragonite is Orthorhombic.

Uses

In addition to being a collectible mineral, Aragonite has uses in the field of Aquatics. It is used in many aquariums as a supplement to recreate coral reef conditions. Furthermore, Aragonite may be used in pipes to decrease limescale deposition.

Notable Localities

The type locality of Aragonite is in Molina de Aragon, Spain, where the mineral is often found in clusters with columnar crystals radiating outwards. Aragonite has also been found in association with Sulfur in the Agrigento Province of Sicily, Italy. The most common Aragonite locality is in the Sefrou Province of Morocco, where cluster specimens have been found, often with brown inclusions.
